NAIROBI, Kenya – North Eastern leaders led by Eldas MP, Adan Kenyan wants the government of Kenya to come with measures to fight the desert locusts that invaded parts of Wajir and Mandera counties.
Speaking during a Press confrence at parliament building , the MPs urged the National government to start aerial spraying of the desert locust in a bid to prevent it from destroying the vast grassland.
” We urge the government and other international agencies to provide aerial spray, because that is the only effective way to fight locust and other pesticides”
” We also appeal to HE the President of the Republic of Kenya to urgently instruct the relevant government ministries and ministers concerned to attend to this emerging issue ” Dr. Keynan said
The MP said the invasion of the locust will going to cause a serious environmental distraction hence faulting both levels of government for failing to establish a disaster preparedness and response planning on such deadly invasion that destroys vegetation and crops .
” The locust will destroy vegetation and crops and it’s apparent that there is lack of National and county preparedness , there is no preparedness at all ” Keynan added
Mandera Senator, Mahamud Maalim also echoed on the need by the government to fast track aerial spray saying that the invasion of the locusts requires the efforts of the County, National and other international agencies .
” This is an invasion , not a military but locus invasion and it requires the efforts of all relevant government and international agencies ” Senator Mohamud said .
On his part , Wajir south MP, Mohamud Omar said the locust invasion experienced in Northern kenya might affect the whole country and urged the government to support the communities who have been so far affected terming the invasion as a global phenomenon.
“The locust invasion is a global event and the government should take a stern action , this could be an invasion of the entire country. Oomar said
The swarm of locust were first spotted at Ashabito and parts of El- wak town , Mandera . It was also reported that the locusts entered Kenya from the eastern side of Somalia and settled in Kotulo area, Wajir County around 4:30 pm yesterday.
