Garissa leaders and business community call for quick interventions.

A section of leaders and traders from garissa and Tana river county are now calling on the government to move with speed and repair section of the damaged Garissa_ Nairobi road.

Led by Salah ward mca Mohamed Ali and traders Mburu Manyatta and Alex Njeru Njiru they said that the situation would be catastrophic if the government does not act swiftly.

On Thursday section of the road at mororo area was complitely cut off following heavy rains upstream.

This comes barely a week after Tula area was also destroyed by flood waters complitely paralysing transport.

MCA Mohamed whose ward had been greatly affected by the floods said that a humanitarian crisis was looming if the government does not repair the road first.

“In my ward am already battling with tena of thousands of my people who are already in the camps and and in urgent need to humanitarian assistance,”he said.

“Now the road that connects us with Nairobi is cut off.we depend on garissa for supply of food and other essentials..so having the road cut off is something we don’t want to imagine because people will be greatly affected.let the government correct the situation becasue it’s urgent,”he added.

On his part Manyatta said that already the town was grappling with a shortage of food stuff since the road was cut off.

“I have been a trader in this part of the county for decades now and I have never witnesses something like this..As we speak I am unable transport perishable goods to Garissa,”he said.

In his part Alex Njeru said that the situation on the road was putting the lives of patients who want to be quickly rushed to nairobi for specialized treatment at risk.

“This is a major road that needs to be repaired as quickly as possible otherwise it might be bad,”he said.

The El Nini rains that have been pounding the country for a month now have killed more than seventy people,displaced thousands and destroyed property with millions.

The Garissa_modogashe road that was also damaged three weeks ago is yet to be repaired affected transport on those plying the road with wajir county the most affected.
