Time for NEP residents to eat the desert locusts that is on verge of destroying their vast grassland

WAJIR– The residents of Northern counties of Kenya are expected to come up with ways to contain the desert locusts that invaded parts of Wajir and Mandera.

The swarm of insects were first spotted at Ashabito and parts of El- wak town in Mandera , it was also reported that the locusts entered Kenya from the eastern side of Somalia and settled in Kotulo area, Wajir County around 4:30 pm.

North Eastern residents who majorly rely on animals are now scratching their head on this destructive locusts that is threatening to destroy their vast grassland.

According to FAO, the insects have already destroyed at least 175,000 acres of farmland in Somalia and Ethiopia.

“A single locust plague can lead to a loss of 170,000 tonnes of grain, enough to feed one million people for a year,” the organisation said.

The residents of Adado, a small town in central somalia have started consuming the insect , which was an unusual way of fighting this locust that invaded by eating them. Islamic scholars have also declared the insects meat as Halal and so permissible to eat .
