
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday launched 50MW Solar Power Plant in Mbalambala Constituency, Garissa County.
The solar power plant, located in Raya, a small town a few kilometres outside Garissa town, will be the largest in East and Central Africa.
Accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Energy Charles Keter, Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale, Garissa Governor Ali Korane and MPs, the President commissioned a Sh13.5 billion Solar Energy Plant in a bid to boost electricity in the county and its environs.
The president emphasized the project initiated since Jubilee Administration came to power, saying that his government will leave tangible legacy in Garissa and other parts of the country.
“Garissa County used to rely on diesel engines for electricity but now it is connected to the national grid, a milestone project initiated by Jubilee Administration,” the president said.
The President also added the 50MW Raya Solar plant will be the first in the county and largest in East and Central Africa.

Garissa Governor who also spoke at the function assured the president that the people of Garissa and its leadership are behind the BBI report and they are ready to support it.
“I want to assure his excellency the President, the people of Garissa and it leadership are behind your administration and we fully support the BBI report,” said Korane.
Garissa MP Aden Duale also praised the president and Jubilee Administration for undertaking life changing projects in Garissa County.
“It is under your leadership that Garissa county and the entire northern Kenya have benefited greatly. From power, to water, roads and other infrastructure. We thank you,” Duale said.
The President also announced the commissioning of Garissa-Modogashe road in the coming months before proceeding for the official opening of the relocated military barracks in Modika, just outside Garissa town.
