Endometriosis is a medical condition that occurs when the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows in other places, such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries or along the pelvis. Endometriosis occurs mainly in women of reproductive age, women who can give birth.
Studies show that endometriosis affects 1/10 women of reproductive age. Most studies majorly concentrate on women who can afford health care facilities and most researches conducted are based on other species closer to humans like the Chimpanzees.
Symptoms of Endometriosis
The condition has signs that depicts you have it and it does not necessarily mean you have endometriosis if you notice these signs.
• Cramping during menstruation. This is because of the internal bleeding from the shedding lining inside the body. Although there are normal menstrual pains, endometriosis patients confirm that the pain is worse. The bleeding can lead to blockage of the fallopian tube and hence cause an endometrial tissue build up.
• Women with the condition can experience painful coitus
• Bowel movements during menstruation
• Painful urination
• Infertility
• Bleeding between periods
The symptoms do not occur to all women and some of them do not have any symptoms at all. They realise they have a problem with having a child and thus visit the hospital for diagnosis.
The biggest complication that comes along with endometriosis is fertility and that is caused by the blockage of the fallopian tube by the endometrial tissues and thus the ovary produced is trapped in it.
However, according to the Office on Women’s Health, once you are diagnosed with the disease, antibiotics to ease the cramps is provided. If there were no symptoms at all, treatment may involve gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, which stops ovulation.
According to National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), this treatment is usually recommended for only six months at a time, and pregnancy is possible once treatment is stopped.
In conclusion, many women suffer in silence as the disease grows and eats them up. Uterus screening is recommended yearly to affirm that you are not at risk of the disease.
