
Mandera Governor Ali Ibrahim Roba, his Marsabit counterpart Mohamud Ali and Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Ali Muktar visited West Pokot landslide survivors to console the families and friends who lost their dear ones on Saturday night mudslides.
Governor Roba who is the Chairman of Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC)has presented a contribution of 2.5 million from his colleague Governors Ali Bunow Korane (Garissa), Amb. Mohamed Abdi (Wajir), Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o(Kisumu), Mohamud Ali (Marsabit)and Stanley Kiptis (Baringo) to go towards helping the victims and sent his condolences message to the people of West Pokot and the entire Nation on behalf of the FCDC and Council of Governors.
“I am deeply saddened at the tragic loss of lives and suffering that our brothers and sisters of West Pokot are experiencing as a result of the landslide. I offer my heartfelt condolences, those of the people of Mandera County and the entire Frontier Counties to the families and friends who lost their lives” Roba posted in Facebook
Forty health specialists from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Led by Head of Emergency Services Dr Simiyu Taabu on Tuesday afternoon arrived at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital to help West Pokot victims of landslides and floods. The specialists including doctors, nurses,clinical officers, surgeons, counsellors and pharmacists , have already dispatched to affected areas.
“We have already operated on one girl, we shall also do counselling to survivors,” said Dr Simiyu.
West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo has requested Moi and Teaching Referral Hospital for the medics’ move to go and save lives.
The death toll has risen to 52 after six more bodies were recovered at Parua area where search and rescue mission was still underway. At least 22 other people are missing after the tragedy that hit Parua, Nyarkulian and Muino villages, West Pokot. The tragedy has also displaced at least 120,000 people according to the area Governor John Lonyangapuo.
The efforts to find and pull more bodies out of mud have been hampered by lack of transport because the major roads heading to the area have been cut off.
Prof. Lonyangapuo has said the county has run out of medicines after the remaining stocks were sent to dispensaries and schools caring for the displaced.
