A path to improved Healthcare at WCRH.

By Yussuf Daud, MPH.
Wajir County Referral Hospital, a vital healthcare institution serving the people of Wajir County, is currently facing significant challenges in delivering quality services. I recently experienced these issues firsthand when seeking medical care for my father. The hospital’s shortcomings, including unmotivated employees and inadequate supplies, highlight the urgent need for change.
In this opinion article, I advocate for transforming Wajir County Referral Hospital into an independent facility overseen by a board of management, as a means to address these pressing concerns and enhance healthcare provision.
One of the primary obstacles faced by Wajir County Referral Hospital is its dependence on the county’s financial system. The hospital’s generated funds are directed to the county revenue account, leaving it vulnerable to shortages of essential supplies. By granting the hospital administration the authority to manage its finances independently, it can establish a dedicated funding stream. This autonomy would ensure the timely procurement of supplies, alleviating the persistent issue of shortages and enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.
Impediment to Quality Care, The size and status of Wajir County Referral Hospital necessitate meticulous planning and efficient fiscal management. Unfortunately, the current system fails to adequately address the maintenance and repair needs of the hospital’s equipment, particularly those acquired through the national government’s Medical Equipment Services (MES) program. Transferring the responsibility for repairs, maintenance, and servicing to the county authority has proven to be problematic. The lack of specialized technicians – the hospital’s current biomedical engineers need to be trained specializing each on a department basis and delays in addressing equipment issues compromise the hospital’s ability to provide optimal care. By establishing an independent board of management, the hospital can develop an annual fiscal plan dedicated to equipment maintenance, ensuring the longevity and functionality of crucial medical machinery.
Unlocking New Opportunities, Independence would grant Wajir County Referral Hospital the flexibility to establish partnerships and collaborations with other institutions and organizations. These alliances can unlock additional funding opportunities, provide access to training programs, and facilitate technological advancements. Research collaborations would enable the implementation of evidence-based practices, fostering innovation and continuous improvement in healthcare services. The ability to negotiate directly with suppliers would ensure a steady supply of essential items, reducing delays and bureaucratic obstacles.
The challenges facing Wajir County Referral Hospital demand immediate attention and action. Transforming the hospital into an independent facility overseen by a board of management is a necessary step towards enhancing healthcare provision in Wajir County. By granting financial autonomy, addressing maintenance and equipment challenges, leveraging expertise, and fostering collaborations, we can empower the hospital to fulfill its potential as a leading healthcare institution. It is time to invest in the future of Wajir County Referral Hospital and ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all its residents.
