Wajir County MP Fatuma Gedi has urged the county government of Wajir to stop demanding bribe in exchange of services and contracts .

Speaking during the distribution of Musquito net at Hodan Primary school , the women MP urged the county government to follow the public procurement laws in tendering projects and splashing millions of taxpayers money on moribund projects which will not benefit the people.

“We were disturbed by this 10 percent bribe which the county officials are demanding, it is illegal and it must stop,”

“We are spending too much money on ‘white elephant projects’ , ” Ms Gedi said.

The outspoken female legislature faulted the county government for treating some section of the communities in the county, especially in giving contracts, terming the move as a way of punishing communities that did not vote for the current administration in the 2017 election .

“How comes only two communities are getting contracts? Don’t you think the rest of the communities have no right to get these contracts,” she added.

The MP also challenged Wajir county assembly members to exercise their oversight power and save the famous Soko Mjinga market from some county officials who are planning to grab the land.

“No one will grab soko Mjinga land so long as I am alive, I was brought up in Wajir town and my mother was a businesswoman there,” she further said.

“Those county officials telling you to vacate are thieves, they don’t have tittle deeds for that land , our MCAs should save this land.”

Ms Gedi also urged the residents of Wajir to support the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI)report spearheaded by President Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying it is the only way to tackle corruption and misuse of public resources .
