Wajir East parliamentary aspirant Yussu Abdi Hussein has called on residents of Northern Kenya to acquire national identification cards and register as voters ahead of the next general election, saying the region should take full advantage of the opportunities created by recent government reforms.

Speaking during a public gathering in Wajir, Abdi praised President William Ruto for removing the vetting requirement for residents of Northern Kenya applying for national identification cards, a policy change introduced last year. According to Abdi, the move has helped address a longstanding challenge that had made it difficult for many residents to access identification documents.

He said the President’s decision demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that citizens in Northern Kenya enjoy equal rights and access to government services without discrimination.

“Residents of Northern Kenya should obtain their identification cards and register as voters so that they can participate fully in the democratic process and support President William Ruto reelection who is working to transform Kenya and the region,” Abdi said.

Abdi noted that Northern Kenya had experienced decades of marginalization but argued that the current administration had made significant strides in addressing development challenges in the region.

He pointed to several completed and ongoing development projects, saying they were evidence of the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure, public services and economic opportunities for local communities.

Abdi credited President Ruto’s administration with prioritizing the needs of Northern Kenya and ensuring that the region receives greater attention in national development plans.

Abdi’s remarks were echoed by former Wajir Governor Ambassador Mohamed Abdi, who also praised the government’s efforts to transform the region. The former governor said the removal of the vetting requirement for ID applicants was a significant step toward promoting equality and inclusion.

He encouraged residents to take advantage of the policy by obtaining identification documents, which are essential for accessing government services, employment opportunities, and participating in elections.

The leaders emphasized the importance of civic participation and urged eligible residents to register as voters, saying their involvement would help shape the future of the region and the country.

Their remarks come as political leaders continue to engage communities across Northern Kenya, highlighting government achievements and encouraging greater participation in national affairs.
