9 women die of cervical cancer in Kenya each day – Garissa CEC for Health

Garissa county has announced to vaccinate atleast 33,885 girls against HPV . The jab especially targets girls aged 10 in a bid to protect them against cervical cancer.

Speaking during the launch of HPV vaccine at Garissa primary grounds , the County Executive for Health Mr. Ahmed Nathir said 9 women die of cervical cancer in kenya daily.

” cervical cancer is now preventable through vaccination. Let us mobilize our Women, they are part of us, let’s protect them from this disease which is preventable. Cervical cancer is the leading cause of death in Cancer related cases among women in Kenya.” Said Mr. Nadhir.

The County health boss also advised the members of the public to demystify the misinformation doing rounds on social media saying the vaccine encourages girls to have intercourse and causes sterility.

” The vaccine was in the country and safely used before though only in private hospitals. We are now giving it free whereas in private hospitals it costs Ksh 8000 ” the CEC added

According to the officials HPV Vaccine will be administered in two doses, 6months and it will be free in all health facilities in Garissa County including refugee camps. The Vaccine will also be offered alongside other routine infant vaccines through public, private, faith based and NGO health facilities.

HPV vaccine can prevent Vaginal and Vulva cancer women; genital warts and anal cancer in both women and men. The vaccine guarantees 95% protection against cervical cancer if administered before the girl is exposed to virus.

The vaccine target girls at the age of 10 since they are likely not sexually active and are about to puberty stage.
