Somber mood engulfed Dadaab refugee camp after a student killed himself on Friday in unclear circumstance , residents confirmed.

Abdi, 21, who was among 2019 KCSE candidates committed suicide in Dadaab refugee camp days after he wrote his last examination paper. It is still unclear what motivated Abdi to subject his life to cruel suicide.

One of Abdi’s friends who spoke to Asal Media said that his friend used to complain about the examination questions and he was completely disappointed with the recently concluded KCSE exams in totality. Officials in Dadaab are yet to comment about the incident and are waiting the investigation to conclude.

UNHCR Report revealed Mental illness including depression and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is number one cause of suicide cases in the refugee camps especially in Dadaab. Cases of suicide and mental illness are increasing in recent years especially in the refugee camps.

This is not the first suicide case that has been reported in the refugee camps, in May this year another student committed suicide in Dadaab after he scored a lower grade in his 2018 KCSE results. His family confirmed that late Qaddafi was demoralised after he received unexpected result and lost hope. Atleast 3 cases of suicide was reported in Dadaab within 2019 alone.

Dadaab is the largest refugee camp in Africa and the third largest complex in the world.
